Inspired by my doctoral thesis at the University of Reading, this book briefly explores how health messages on food labels evolved during the Industrial Revolution (1850–1918).
As mass production raised concerns about food safety and widespread adulteration, new regulations emerged to protect public health. These changes significantly influenced both the verbal and visual communication on food labels. Claims of purity became key marketing tools to reassure consumers about food safety. By the late 19th century, harmful substitutes had declined, but the rise of chemical additives, such as colorants and preservatives, sparked fresh debates—and led to new strategies for communicating what was truly safe to eat.
